Oscar Nominations 2023

The Oscar nominations for 2023 were announced in a live press conference for the first time since 2020. This was the culmination of months of film festival premieres, Q&As, precursor awards, and general commotion. It's also a lot of fun for award-obsessed people who look forward to nominations like Christmas morning.

Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, and the German war drama All Quiet on the Western Front were nominated for best picture and a slew of other categories below the line, as was widely anticipated. With 11 nominations, Everything Everywhere All at Once led the pack. However, there were surprises everywhere, perhaps most notably in the category for best actress. Andrea Riseborough got her first Oscar nomination, shaking up a best actress category that also had Ana de Armas nominated for the critically acclaimed Blonde, after a determined last-minute push for her small independent film To Leslie. In the meantime, established competitors like Danielle Deadwyler (Till) and Viola Davis (The Woman King) were left out. Things were a little bit calmer in the category of best actor, with each of the five candidates from our Oscar predictions making the cut; All five of the nominees for best actor are first-time Oscar hopefuls, which is unusual.

Oscar Nominations 2023

A mix of Academy members, publicists, and awards strategists gathered inside the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills for the announcement. Many of them had just returned from Sundance. The hosts Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams warmly applauded as each nominee was announced. During the break between the first and second sets of nominations, Williams joked, "We aren't fired yet." We saw one attendee wearing the hot dog fingers from Everything Everywhere All at Once despite the early call time because it was a room full of passionate awards season viewers. Every time a surprise nominee was announced, including Paul Mescal and Andrea Riseborough for lead actor and actress, there were loud gasps and cheers. People who were closely involved in these campaigns celebrated their newly minted nominees with a lot of "congratulations" as the nominations ended.

Since the beginning of the season, when the Venice and Telluride film festivals were held in August, many of these titles and names have been mentioned as potential contenders. Even though Fraser and The Whale received praise, Banshees star Colin Farrell won the prize for best actor in Venice. At the Toronto International Film Festival, The Fabelmans won the audience award, which has historically been a strong indicator of Oscar success. However, as with any Oscar season, there have been surprises. Even before the fall festival started, few people expected the springtime hit Everything Everywhere All at Once to keep going and become what many people think is the front-runner for the best picture. In addition, a fascinating mix of blockbusters (Elvis, Top Gun:) have been receiving mixed reviews, and directors and stars who appeared destined for Oscar success have been taking a back seat. Maverick) and lighter fare (Tár, Women Talking) received the majority of the attention.
