Former Texas Rep. Will Hurd announces presidential bid

Former Texas Congressman Will Hurd announced on Thursday that he would be throwing himself into the ring for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Heard was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2014 and did not run for re-election in 2020, but is now leading the party in a crowded presidential race with 13 other candidates.

The former congressman has been an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, saying last month that the Joe Biden-Trump campaign would be "a repeat of hell."

"A dark horse candidate like me can do that," Hurd, 45, told CBS Morning Thursday. "First, don't be afraid of Donald Trump. Many candidates in this race are afraid of Donald Trump. But we also need to create a different vision."

In a video announcing his candidacy, Hurd cited illegal immigration and inflation as one of his motivations for running for office.

Our enemies are plotting, causing chaos, and threatening the American dream. Illegal immigration and fentanyl will flood our country from the country. Inflation is still out of control. "Crime and homelessness are on the rise in our cities," Hurd said in the video.

Before entering politics, Hurd worked as a secret agent for the CIA in the field of counter-terrorism.

Hurd surprised bipartisan strategists when he won his first election in 2014, defeating incumbent Democrat Pete Gallego by about 2,400 votes. In 2018, Hurd won re-election with just under 1,000 votes.

When Mr. Hurd announced his retirement, he denied he was worried about the possibility of being re-elected in an increasingly competitive constituency, but instead said he left Congress to increase Republican diversity. He was the only black Republican in the House at the time of his retirement announcement.

"President Biden can't solve these problems, or he can't solve them," Hurd said in the video. "And nominate an illegal, selfish and failed politician like Donald Trump who lost the House, the Senate and the White House, and everyone knows Joe Biden."
